A Barnet resident with complex mental health needs

Fred lives in Barnet and due to complex mental health needs struggles to look after himself without help.  Age UK matched him with a volunteer who called weekly, and arranged to support with his shopping.  Reliant on his microwave oven to heat food, Age UK Barnet also assessed him for a personal grant towards a new microwave oven to replace the one that broke during the pandemic and also provided him with an emergency food parcel whilst a personal grant was being administered.

He is now managing well now, able to pay for his shopping and is feeling more settled.

“I wanted to express my immense thanks and appreciation for gifting me the microwave, it’s fantastic. It’s made a massive difference to my life and it’s the first hot meals I’ve had in two weeks. It’s lifted my mood.”

This is a real-life case study based on stories provided by London Borough of Barnet and Age UK Barnet
